Scope of Work: Under the direction of the Public Works Director, and employee in this class performs a wide variety of hands on work. This employee performs skilled and semi-skilled work supporting all functions of the public works department including: Building and Grounds maintenance, Water and Sewer Maintenance, Street Maintenance and Repair, Sanitation, and Park maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
-Operates light to medium construction or maintenance equipment such as, but not limited to: tractors, backhoes, zero-turn mowers, skid steer loaders, and dump trucks.
-Assists crew with manual labor efforts of Water and Sewer repair, asphalt repair, mowing, landscaping, debris removal
-Maintains the safe and efficient operation of equipment by completing routine maintenance, pre-trip inspections, repairing worn or damaged parts.
-Locates and marks water and sewer lines for utility department, other utility companies, and private contractors.
– Operates tapping machine to make water and sewer taps and service connections; installs hydrants, meters, valves, clamps, and related pipeline apparatus; sets meter boxes; repairs and replaces fire hydrants.
-Assists with inspections and repair of pumping stations, reading water meters, and other related tasks.
-Frequently supervises work crew; provides barriers and visual notifications in order to maintain the safety of citizens around the work site.
-Supports all other divisions with special events, storm cleanup, and inclement weather prevention.
-Completes basic building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repairs.
-Completes other duties as assigned.
QUALIFIACTIONS:
-Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, may require commercial driver’s license.
-Posession of or ability to obtain Wastewater Collection grade 1 or 2 within 12 months.
-Posession of or ability to obtain water distribution grade c within 12 months.
Physical Requirements:
Work generally involves constant field work requiring medium to heavy physical activity; Exposure to varied weather conditions, noise, vibrations, and hazards of construction equipment during operations.
